Actually Keeping It Real

SYN has emerged as a major player in a media market dominated by powerful commercial operators.

A typical week on SYN 90.7 will include programs created by: jazz musicians, political commentators, music historians, sexual experimenters, medical students, freestyle rhymers, internet downloaders, footy freaks, writers, wrestling fans, Somalian Melburnians, feminists, comedians, playwrights, international students, DJs, cultural commentators, media moguls in the making, recent arrivals to Australia, hip hoppers - and the rest!

SYN specialises in music that young people cannot hear anywhere else. This includes a commitment to local hip-hop, indie, punk and ska, metal, dance and rock.

Young people are not a homogenous group with similar tastes and ideas. The Melbourne youth community demands diversity and SYN provides it.

Innovative Programming

Over 186,000 Melburnians a month have shown their support for the innovative youth media content created by SYN (McNair Ingenuity Independent Survey 2006). The continued growth and success of our audience has shown that SYN's eclectic program mix appeals to a wide spectrum of the community. SYN's most popular programs are also the most innovative, including:

    The Naughty Rude Show, a frank, fun and interactive show about sex and relationship issues for young people;

    Panorama, SYN's flagship current affairs program, broadcast nationally via the Community Radio Network satellite;

    Asian Pop Night, playing the latest Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Japanese pop - a Tuesday night ritual for Melbourne's Asian student community;

    Lip Radio, a show for girls who are not afraid to speak their minds! An in-depth discussion of topics ranging from feminism to fashion, sex, careers and relationships.

    1700, a daily TV program on C31 Melbourne featuring music clips, short films, animations, segments and interviews.

    Word War One, a hip-hop MC battle competition featuring some of Australia's youngest and freshest MC talent.

    Live @ Lunch, regular outside broadcasts from local Melbourne secondary schools featuring bands, performances and DJs from the school.
