Album Review: The Basics, Ingredients

Ingredients, the best of The Basics, is a collection of catchy pop tunes from the band’s four albums, EPs and singles spanning eleven years. The band is made up of three members: Wally De Backer, better known as Gotye, on drums and vocals, Kris Schroeder (bass and vocals) and Tim Heath (guitar and vocals).Originally from Melbourne, the talented musicians clearly know how to construct upbeat and catchy songs—just look at what De Backer has done as a solo artist with “Somebody That I Used To Know”.The first two songs on the album, “Wait For You” and “Just Hold On”, perfectly sum up The Basics: highly influenced by pop culture, captivating and happy. Both are great songs and give the best introduction possible to the band. “Just Hold On” has extra meaning for me because it was used in the final episode of The Shambles.“Money (Gimme, Gimme)” is a standout track with its punk-rock sound, similar to The Living End of recent years. “Home Again” is another very well-crafted song, which demands several listens. The band get their rock and roll beat going with tracks such as “Rattle My Chain” and “Get Me Down”; which is the song that the band experiments most on with its shaky vocals, guitar solo and mainly instrumental sound in the second half.My only reservations about this collection are that most of the songs focus on the topic of love and are perhaps too upbeat. Despite the band’s skill and ability to move across genres, this can get tiresome and repetitive when listening to the album from start to finish.Overall, however, The Basics create good tunes. Ingredients is the sort of album you could have playing in the background at a house party and expect everyone to enjoy, or simply a record that will lift your spirits after a hard day at Matthew Naqvi
