My first Radio experience was hearing Bruce Mansfield’s & Phillip Brady’s Nightline on 3AW when I was about 7 years old.
I remember being so fascinated & intrigued about Radio and all it’s possibilities, being amazed about how they could have a conversation with a whole city.
So most school nights I used to pinch my mums old flip phone and call in to the show. I probably was the only one under 50 that called them.
Sadly Bruce passed away in 2016. I was luckily enough to be invited into the studio by Simon Owens last year.
Flash forward a few years into my early teens and I was an avid consumer of guess who? ‘Hamish & Andy’ they don’t really need an introduction… They are hilarious dudes and massive inspirations. Top 40 pop has never really been my cup of tea but I endured it for their amazing content.
A few years down the line and there was one show I particularly remember from them. It was Radio like I’d never heard it before, a crossover show. Hamish & Andy and a breakfast show in the UK. Two shows in two different countries at once.. it blew my mind and it wasn’t until my nerdy self wondered what it sounded like from the UK’s perspective that I uncovered a gem of a show.
The Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio. I podcasted the show here and listened to it every morning on my way to work, on the other side of the world. Christian and his sidekick Richie Firth and the news team. Extremely funny and nothing like any breakfast show I heard here previously. It made even the worst workdays bearable.
Never would I have thought in a million years Christian would have started a show here in Melbourne at Gold 104.3 where I’d be able to listen live in my breakfast time.
During the time before I had never really thought about attempting Radio myself, but because of that show. It had all started to click, and I decided to have a crack at breakfast radio myself and jumped onto the airwaves hosting Get Cereal in the latter part of 2016 and fell in love with it.
My interview with Rove McManus on Get Cereal:
Since Get Cereal, I started my own seasonal music show called ‘Rockology’ where I played my favourite Rock artists everything from the 60’s till present day rock. Following that, I started a comedy Podcast called ‘What The News’ with friend & talented comedian Brent Watkinson. Where we chatted & joked about bizarre and just plain weird news stories. Sadly the show is in a long hiatus as Brent moved interstate – props to him for picking up a commercial gig. So for now it probably won’t return.
For the last 2 years, I’ve been hosting the Friday Sport’s Desk which included some lockdown Facebook Live Pre Game Shows and am currently in the works of developing a Vinyl themed music show. Stay Tuned!
I also recently completed a Radio Broadcast course at AFTRS in Sydney and a Diploma of Screen and Media (Radio and TV) here in Melbourne. So I’m hopeful you’ll hear me back behind a mic very soon! I’m so glad that this wonderful organisation called SYN has given me the opportunity & resources to hopefully begin the foundations of a career at this amazing thing I love called ‘Radio’.
Here’s a documentary I was featured in about the ‘Future of Radio’ created by Victoria University students in 2017.
