BOINC

SYN is a community youth media outlet in Melbourne, Australia, run by young people for young people. SYN produces radio, television and online content. Consequently, SYN has a dozen computers that sit idling every night, so we thought we'd put their CPUs to work on something useful.

BOINC is an open source software platform that uses the concept of distributed computing to process large amounts of data that would otherwise require a supercomputer to process. The idea is that idling computers around the world, like the ones at SYN, could be analysing data to benefit the science community instead of wasting electricity.

Some of the legitimate science that SYN is working on includes:

  • Climate change, by analysing past & future climate models of the Earth through Climateprediction.net
  • Disease cures, by analysing protein folding, design and docking via the Rosetta@home project
  • Alien intelligence, by analysing deep space for broadcast transmissions through SETI@home (yes, it's legit science!)
  • Astrophysics, by analysing deep space for pulsars (spinning neutron stars) with the Einstein@home project
  • Chemistry, by analysing the predicted interactions of molecules in quantum chemistry through the QMC@home project

You too can contribute your computer to a worthy cause by downloading BOINC (Windows/Mac/Linux).

Once you've done that, you can join the SYN.org.au team to contribute to SYN's BOINC team total!
