What is BOINC?

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a non-commercial middleware system for volunteer computing, originally developed to support the SETI@home project, but intended to be useful for other applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world.

It is free/libre open source software (FLOSS) that allows anyone to develop a distributed computing application to aid their research project. Originally designed for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI@home) project, today BOINC has been adapted for research in many of the physical and life sciences.

BOINC only runs when your computer is not in use. That is, it only uses the computational power from your CPU that would otherwise go to waste, for example while you are reading a webpage, or making a cup of coffee. To get started download BOINC here (Windows/Mac/Linux), and check out the Unofficial BOINC Wiki for help.
