Canberra Hub Visit
Australia is a pretty big place, and this only becomes clearer when looking at how far and wide SYN Nation Hubs spread across the country. Let’s just say we don’t mind a bit of distance!
Because of this, one of the National Project Coordinator’s biggest jobs is to close that distance as much as possible; through calls, emails, carrier pigeons, facebook, and perhaps most effectively, Hub visits!
This week marks the next leg of SYN Nation’s goal to have as much face-to-face experiences as possible with each Hub and its awesome volunteers; time to hop, skip and jump (or just fly) to Australia’s capital, Canberra!
A youth media collective with a mission, Young Folk Media at 2XX 98.3FM have remained an outstanding Hub on the SYN Nation platform. With volunteers like host of The Soapbox Lee Constable and Hub Coordinator, host of Jugendzeit and owner of the 2nd largest collection of typewriters in Australia Jasper Lindell, it’s unsurprising that the Hub produces some consistently outstanding content, taking all things Canberra and sending them out nation (and world) wide!
The Hub visit was an excellent opportunity to meet and discuss youth radio with Hub volunteers, and National Project Coordinator Jessica Lukjanow also joined the team in heading an information session for some new potential Young Folk Media Hub members. With an excellent turnout on the night, it was a great opportunity to show young Canberrans how far the SYN Nation Hub is spread, and how fantastic it is to be a part of such a supportive network.
Another achievement seen from the trek across to the windy city (and it was surprisingly windy) was a new SYN Hub partnership- everyone, please welcome Australian National University’s Woroni Radio to the SYN Nation squad!
Established as ANU’s official student magazine in 1950, Woroni has been a breeding ground for young writers, investigators, explorers and creatives to flex their skills, and in 2012 expanded even further to a weekly internet radio broadcasting station.
Woroni Radio Editor Caitlin Magee will be adding Woroni Hub Coordinator to her skills, and has big plans for the station and its involvement at SYN: stay tuned in SYN’s third season for a feature radio play from the Hub as well as other goodies on the Woroni Hour, every Tuesday from 4-5pm!
Stay tuned for our next update, which includes a three-part guided tour across Western Australia- regional radio at it’s finest!
