The Fatal Shore and Beyond: Stuart MacIntyre on Robert Hughes

Art critic and historian Robert Hughes has died in New York aged 74.

Prominent among a lifetime of achievements is his Australian convict history, The Fatal Shore.
 
When it was published in 1987, historian Stuart MacIntyre wrote a famous review in Meanjin, comparing it with Edward Gibbons’ The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
