Julie - Thursday 24th of April, 2008
I watched The Veronicas get hit in the head with a glow stick while on stage once.
Priceless.

Dennis - Sunday 10th of February, 2008
Hmph... all that aside, welcome to Block 1 (or thereabouts!)
Looking forward to a great year in music, lots of local bands putting out new albums which you'll be hearing on N&A :)
Barbara - Sunday 10th of February, 2008
K. Keep it up guys. Keep up the work you do at New and Approved. It's great. I think that discussion like this are good.
Hey Rick your use of words while highly intelligent or so you think, no offense sound like their coming from an old guy - I mean 'dignify your blatant self promotion with comment, but alas' what in the world does that mean!? Alas no ones used that word since the 19th Century (until now).Lol.
Oh yeah, see you guys at Nova in a couple of years time!
Anthony Laughton - Sunday 10th of February, 2008
Yes, I want to make a career out of radio. But you know what I think I can bring to my employer? Individuality. The fact that I can say I don't like The Veronicas, and what's there to justify.. They are just plain bad. I could sit around and be an air head like most commercial radio presenters, and do and say what I'm told. Or I could not. And I choose not. Yes, you make a good point about diversity in a radio career, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to sacrifice musical interests to "make it". And that's good that you won't stop in your quest for commercial radio success! That's awesome. But I have been involved with N&A for a while now, and I do know what the listener's like. So far, Rowe has been the only complaint, because of our lack of commercial music. Well that is not what New and Approved is about.
I'm sorry, but that's the bottom line.
Bel - Saturday 9th of February, 2008
I once heckled The Veronicas. That made me feel good about myself. Makes a good story too.
Anthony, I almost don't want to dignify your blatant self promotion with comment, but alas, I have. You're a man after listeners' ears, and I'm sure you'll get them, if not by shear force alone.
I'm curious as to whether those of you who think N&A need to 'branch out' with their music selection to include commercial music are putting the same arguments to the commercial stations and telling them to play more 'alternative' music? Telling N&A, a show dedicated to playing new, alternative music, is like telling a Hip Hop show to not be so narrow minded and play some Indie for once.
SYN does play a wide variety of music, from the crap to the good, from the commercial to the alternative. The Lonch Lunch is an example of free-for-all uncensored music selection. Over 140 hours a week of SYN is full of shows choosing whatever music they like. There's no music snobbery going on, at least not from just one perspective, just a matter of different tastes. Some people might bag out N&A music selection and want more commercial music... are they music snobs then, for wanting more generic, homogenised, record label produced, commercially driven, over marketed music? Or is that just their musical tastes? By the same token, why can't music selectors for N&A decide that commercial music is so readily accessible and over played on other radio stations and the like, that they would prefer to only offer an alternative to that, and support lesser known, up-and-coming, or else just plain different but equally good artists?
Rick James - Saturday 9th of February, 2008
Hey Bel. That's true! And as a volunteer of SYN I stand by the decisions both made by the board and it's members, especially regarding music.
From what I understand Radio Department have declared that content and music is entirely up to the presenters. Which is great as it allows for a much greater 'variety' than commercial stations
In saying that SYN have decided to play alternative music to help benefit the community.
So Bel, can I ask you something? The same goes to Jon and Barbara?
Do you really want to make a career out of radio? Ask yourself that. If so, which I am assuming, I suggest that you guys also be more diverse and acknowledge a fair range of music in stead of just bagging it. Because you won't get jobs in the industry with that attitude.
I don't want to seem like I'm coming a bit strong, but that is simply the impression I get from what I am reading.
Look listen to my show on the 16th at 7am. Really listen, then sms through your thoughts.
Personally I would love to get a job in commercial radio love it, and I will not stop in my quest to get there - so I really don't care what music I play as long as its good and what the listeners want.
Anthony Laughton - Friday 8th of February, 2008
New and Approved - All new music, catering to ALL tastes. The original point myself, Jon and Barbara were trying to make was the list of songs Rowe mentioned, were very commercial songs. They get mammoth amounts of air time on commercial stations. Here at Syn,
we like to play different types of music that you may not have heard, in order for everyone who chooses the music and listens to our program a chance to broaden their musical horizons. We carefully choose the music to give all artists a go. The Veronica's get a hell of a lot of air time on commercial stations, I'm not going to let them eat into airplay that could go to a great acoustic/punk/folk/hip hop (etc) artist who doesn't have the same opportunities as the Veronicas to get their stuff heard.
Anthony, it's great you're getting positive feedback for your music variety. We too, get awesome feedback for our variety because we offer an alternative to commercial drive slots music wise. This is the point we are trying to make. The reason New and Approved exists on SYN, and why it does so well is because we offer an alternative! The best new music from all around the world, from all genres. This has been an interesting discussion thus far, I think anyone who has queries about the type of music we play should email me at newandapproved@syn.org.au. Maybe you guys could drop by our new music meetings and see how things get done!
Bel - Friday 8th of February, 2008
G'day my fellow syners!
As current presenter and producer of The Long Lunch (Summer Mondays 2-4pm) and now Breakfast (7-9 Saturdays), I personally love to give the listeners music that, excuse the line from another commercial station, makes them and myself feel good.
I will play a wide spread wheter its an 80's hit, to current day pop song, to the most unknown song known to man. It is variety at its best and I constantly am receiving feedback that is positive. Its generally a bit mainstream, and I understand this may or may not appeal to everyone. But with radio you'll find some people tune in for the presenter, and others for the music.
The other week I played Alicia Keys, but not her new one ("No One") but an older one of hers, and I had a caller who just loved it.
Look while I think the bagging of the Veronicas is very unjustified, I think you all raise valid points.
The most important thing is we have listeners listening in...so make sure you tune into Breakfast from the 16th of Feb at 7am.
Check the home page news section for more details.
Anthony Laughton - Wednesday 6th of February, 2008
Kyf - I think you'll find that N&A does play good music, whether it's alternative or commercial. It's just that they have deemed The Veronica's not be good. Fair call in my opinion ...
Me - Wednesday 6th of February, 2008
Oh enough of the music snobbery. Not all good music fits neatly into one genre. You should branch out and you'll probably find something you'll like. Whether it's commercial or alternative is irrelevant.
Kyf - Sunday 3rd of February, 2008
At N&A, and at SYN, while we do feature some mainstream music, we prefer to work with artists that don't have multi-million dollar publicity engines churning behind them...
....and HELLO! The Veronica's is not music. It's cats drowning.
Barbara - Wednesday 30th of January, 2008
pantera can stay dead and buried (if you pardon the pun).
all that pop music is played on commercial radio (and Detention). SYN 90.7FM is an alternative radio station - we provide the alternative to this sort of 'crap'.
Jon - Wednesday 30th of January, 2008
Listen to the Long Lunch Mondays 2-4.
Anthony - Tuesday 22nd of January, 2008
Hi Rowe, while you may think the alternative stuff we play is "crap", New and Approved is all about new music catering to ALL tastes.. most of the stuff you listed is just pop, and very commercial pop at that. We don't play those types of songs because our listener's are generally tuning in to hear the alternative stuff we play.. if that's the sort of music you're into maybe New and Approved isn't the show for you.
And I refuse to play the Veronicas.. despite them being new or not, they're rubbish.
Bel. W - Sunday 20th of January, 2008
So if it's new and approved, why do we not here some of the newest hits instead of this new unknown crap
stuff like
The Veronicas - Untouched
Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
Natalie Gauci
Soula Boy Tell e'm - Crank That
Shannon Noll
