“I am so grateful for the life I have”

Over the weekend SYN Media held training for 6 new young people to join our Raise The Platform radio show –  a platform for young people to advocate for and share experiences of people with disabilities. Raise The Platform was initially a partnership between SYN Media and the Youth Disability Advocacy Service in 2013 – The partnership provided participants with tailored radio and media training and their own dedicated radio show on SYN 90.7. At the conclusion of the training the participants had such a great time that they applied to keep the show going and it’s been thriving ever since.

As the Education and Training Manager at SYN Media I love seeing the excitement of new trainees as they pick up new skills and have a go at media making. I also love when SYN volunteers want to get involved in our training and support/mentor new trainees. Participants from our first Raise the Platform group put their hands up to support our new trainees this weekend and I wanted to share (with her permission) a Facebook post from Shaz – an original Raise The Platformer who came to the training to support:

I am so grateful for the life I have… This weekend I spent time with the new broadcasters myself and other co-hosts hand selected for our radio show Raise The Platform. Their passion and enthusiasm is incredible and I am so excited to be mentoring & supporting them, so together we can encourage others with disabilities to have their voices heard. I am honored to be apart of Raise the Platform and so Thankful to SYN And the Youth Disability Advocacy Service Victoria for their support in helping us to create a show I adore.. I am so thankful to our new broadcasts: Ashleigh, Harry, Jack, Justin, Keith and Jade for coming onto the show with already so much passion and love for what we do on Raise the platform. Lastly I want to thank Madeleine, Sally and Danae for their endless support. And Tim, the show never would have become what it has without you.. we miss you xoxo

For me, this is what SYN and our Media Learning programs is all about. The positive impact that giving young people access to media skills and platforms can have on their lives never fails to blow me away. The biggest thanks really needs to go to our SYN volunteers and trainees who bring so much passion, energy and creativity to everything they do. The volunteers producing Raise The Platform should be very proud of what they’ve achieved.

P.S – If you’d love to see a similar impact – we’ve worked with a wide range of youth community groups. If you are, know or work with an under represented youth community please chat to us. We’d love to work with you. You find find more information on our Community Media Learning page here.
