Penguin Classics: The Beach

All you need to know about Penguin Classics, so you can sound cultured and informed at nerdy parties. This week Alice tells Claudia how Alex Garland’s The Beach differs from Danny Boyle’s film: that the desperation to preserve paradise above the welfare of its members is what destroys it, that Richard is less annoying in the book but the story is just as gripping and reckless, and the film has more sex and (interestingly) less gruesome violence.
