I think that these terriost are a pain in the bum and should all be killed and not just left in the prison for goverments to keep spending money on them staying in there. Why not just kill them like they have killed so many other people.

Thanks for your comments. It's interesting to watch the developments which have taken place in the short time since this segment went to air.

PM John Howard is now saying he's "very angry" about the treatment of the Hicks case.

It's a little bit of a turn around from his stance in 2002, when he said about David Hicks:

"He's in detention, he knowingly joined the Taliban and Al Qaeda — I don't have any sympathy for any Australian who's done that."

Change of heart, perhaps?

Fair enough, while that may be evident, my contention was that it would be unreasonable to free David Hicks from Guantanamo only after he had been charged, whether or not he is guilty, he must face trial. The evidence will play itself out in court.

Secondly, it was not my belief that Hicks was responsible for the instability in the Middle East but he has allegedly supported al-Qaeda and not too long ago, it was made known that Hicks swore alleigance to Osama bin Laden.

Though to quote Hick's defense team, the US prosecution have acknowledged that Hicks never fired a shot at anyone, so the charge of attempted murder could be argued to be a "thought crime", and the charge of providing material support for terrorism is a crime which has been applied retrospectively. It wasn't a crime when Hicks was alleged to have committed it.

Also, can we really blame Hicks for the lack of control and democracy in the Middle East?

I'm amazed to hear how little many people that were quized on the streets of Melbourne knew about the Hicks trial.

My amazement by how many people, it seems, have relentlessly rallied behind David Hicks' release is doubled.

The left wing group GetUp, consisting of Labor's state president Bill Shorten and MP Evan Thornley among the board, would have us believe Hicks was merely a saint who was at the wrong place at the wrong time by the way they televise photos of a freckle-faced nine-year old to the voice over of his father, Terry (not to suggest a reason for visiting rural Afghanistan in the first place).

No one is glad about the time it took to charge the man, including myself. But now he has been charged for attempted murder and providing support for al-Qaeda, it is only right he face justice for his alleged crimes of supporting those against the efforts of the US and allied forces and in short, democracy in the Middle East.
