SYN’s visit to Gippsland
Last weekend we were lucky enough to be at Gippsland FM to meet some of the local young broadcasters at a Youth Engagement Forum run by SYN’s Education and Training Manager, JB.
Our Young Media Leader in the area, Bianca, brought together station volunteers, board members, community members and ten under-26 volunteers to talk broadcast training, show ideas and the value of community radio in Gippsland.
As part of a guided session with JB, our volunteers set to planning and brainstorming their shows for SYN Nation and Gippsland FM. I could see some great radio shows taking shape, such as a late night electro set, a metal show that serves as a space for discussion and a music show, with a bit of talking, that aims to ‘make people happy’.
The volunteers who came along to the session were so enthusiastic! Some had caught the broadcast bug while on air last year with the Gippsland FM youth show, Be Heard. Others were new to radio but came to the station with the kind of passion for music and discussion that makes great community radio.
Gippsland FM has been truly supportive of these young broadcasters and the station as a whole has made great steps to get more young people on air and involved in the organisation. With a great support network of board members, community organisations and other volunteers, the Gippsland region is sure to be hearing some new perspectives very soon, and that’s what this project is all about.
After seeing these volunteers start working through their ideas with such passion and enthusiasm, I am so keen to see what these South-Easterly SYNners produce. Our Gippsland volunteers will be coming to you via SYN Nation and Gippsland FM very soon, so stay tuned!
