The Big Pink – Future This

Following up from the success of debut A Brief History of Love, The Big Pink have released their second album Future This. As you’re listening you can’t help but compare their current effort with their earlier LP. It’s hard not to when you come out with a song like “Dominos”, which is as close as you can come to pure pop perfection. Quite simply, the band have set their own standards with such a track and with Future This they slightly miss the the mark. The cohesive mesh between noise-pop and ambient Massive Attack-esque electronica seems to elude them on this album.
“Hit The Ground (Superman)” and “Give It Up” are admirable attempts at replicating that pure pop sound, but it is really “Stay Gold” that comes closest; it’s the “Dominos” of Future This.

Most of the album is a bit average and run of the mill but “1313” is a highlight. The song along with “Stay Gold” would fit seamlessly on A Brief History of Love.

The Big Pink’s debut promised so much it seems the band are still finding their feet with Future This.
