The first workshop

“I’m beginning to understand that being young shouldn’t be seen as a barrier, now that I know what I and this collective of youths has already achieved”   Honni (Edge Radio, Hobart)

Our first workshop was a great success! In just three and a half days the Young Media Leaders packed in workshop sessions, meeting mentors, a visit to JOY FM, two high-carb meals and SYN’s massive annual volunteer camp! So the YML’s were busy, to say the least, but the YML’s are also amazing and everyone hit the ground running, throwing themselves into the workshops and getting a lot out of the four days.

The project workshop ran from Sunday afternoon, kicking off with a tour of the SYN office and studios, through to Monday afternoon before we all headed off to SYN Camp. These introductory sessions were as much about the YML’s meeting each other and their mentors as they were about leadership and content development, though we did manage to fit some in there!

The first afternoon was dedicated to getting to know SYN and the community radio sector, meeting the project mentors and eating a small but tasty pile of home made scones. After a day of travel and meeting one another, you’d think the YML’s would be tired, but no, instead they charged through all the workshops to enjoy a dinner with the mentors celebrating the start of the project!

On the Monday morning the YML’s were up damn early for a workshop focussing on SYN’s values, building the media hubs and producing national content. Next up, a leadership and personality style workshop delivered by our Education and Training manager, JB, where the YML’s got to think about their leadership positions. We next crammed in a visit to JOY FM‘s (very shiny and nice) studios on Bourke Street and a tour from general manager Conrad Browne. All of this happened before the YML’s headed off on a road trip to Healesville for SYN Camp.

Wow. It was a huge workshop and hugely successful! Thanks to all the staff and mentors who came along and gave it their all. Our YML’s were inspired, engaged and have well and truly become a part of the SYN family!
