The Pretty Littles – Fairweather

The Pretty Littles are a fairly recent band, having formed in ʼ09, the recent release of their first EP Fairweather has set a high standard for only more brilliant music to come. The bandʼs notable influence from The Vasco Era is evident throughout the EP but, The Pretty Littles have a slightly more rough, bluesy feeling which sets them apart from most popular Australian bands.Fairweather opens with a charming melodic bass line, destined to get toes tapping. The first track “Minge” then follows on with raw guitar strumming and vocals matching the allurement of it, an essence which continues throughout the course of the EP. From start to finish, the progression of songs has a unique charisma. The EP then continues on to “Tread Careful”, it begins with a smashing guitar solo. When the rest of the band comes into play, thrashing beats are produced followed by a more mellow verse. This transition displays the singers vocal abilities impeccably, although the original raw tone was still there, it was more emotive and passionate. As a listener, you canʼt help but be drawn in by the combination of Simonʼs rustic sounding guitar, Jonoʼs hypnotizing bass lines, Willʼs smashing percussions and Jackʼs wailing vocals. Together, the group sound like theyʼve stepped out of a Melbourne bar from the 1970ʼs when rockʼs original blues influences were more obvious, with less of a punk sound. The Pretty Littles have an original sound in comparison to Australiaʼs current rock music scene. Thanks to the producer Tom Iansek of Melbourne band Big Scary, this band has a classic Melbourne feel to it of brilliantly written hypnotic rock melodies. I certainly recommend Fairweather and look forward to future others from this Kellie Macnaughtan
