The West Are Travelling South

At the start of the 2013 season West coast were a certain top 4 contender though as the season is slowly unfolding it seems even the finals are becoming unlikely.  After finishing 4th in 2011 and 5th in 2012 the Eagles were entering this year as one of the premiership favourites along with Collingwood, Hawthorn, and Sydney.  Though let’s not forget its only early days and there is a long season ahead though if they don’t act now time will run out.  With stars such as Cox, Naitanui, Embley, Kerr, Selwood, Kennedy and Lecras to name a few the club has the potential to be a real threat. As well as a group of younger players Andrew Gaff, Jack Darling and Beau Masten who destined for greatness the club is seriously underperforming.  Injury is the main excuse with Naitanui, Kerr, former Collingwood premiership player Sharrod Wellingham and  former number 6 draft pick Cale Morton all yet to play a game this season. And if that wasn’t bad enough Waters are others who have Embley barely contributed due to injuries as well. Yes injuries are disappointing yet the best of teams push past it, take Geelong , Collingwood and Hawthorn for example. The cats were without the likes of Travis Varcoe , Nathan Vardy and Daniel Menzel for majority of last year. Hawthorn lost Baily, Bateman and Guerra and Collingwood Didak, Johnson, Ball and Mcaffer all had troubles throughout 2013 yet managed finals.  After 1 win from 4 matches this year this week’s round 5 clash against Port Adelaide is crucial.  The Eagles will have to beat Port  who are in red hot from winning their forst4 games this year or the season may be over before they know it.  Peter Tseros
