Unlocking the SYN Warrnambool Media Hub
My name is Sam Maloney and I am SYN’s young media leader for Warrnambool, Victoria, working with 3WAY-FM to involve young people in making content for SYN and 3WAY. Warrnambool is a city of around 28,000, 4000 are 15-24, thats a lot of stories to tell and creativity to share. Compared to other parts of Victoria we are also a fairly isolated, three hours away from Melbourne. Through SYN Nation we can bring young people together who may also feel isolated geographically or socially, in Victoria, Australia and around the world.
SYN Nation is not about the content it produces but what that it unlocks. It unlocks the stories of the country, the screamo music not often heard, the tight programme grid of many stations can be relaxed. It unlocks like minded young people who can connect through the SYN community. It unlocks and develops the potential of young people.
I have been lucky to be able to share ideas and experiences with the young media leaders attend the excellent workshops from some very experienced and diverse people, the leadership and support from the staff and volunteers at SYN and 3WAY-FM as well as from my brilliant mentor has made me confident about the project.
We now have Screamway, a heavy music programme produced here in Warrnambool going to air Wednesdays at 8 on SYN Nation but thats just the start, I will be working with 3WAY to develop the skills of the young people at the station and recruit even more this is just the beginning.
