Vale Ralph McLean
On behalf of the SYN members, the Board of SYN would like to pay its respects to former Channel 31 Chairman Ralph McLean, who passed away on December the 25th.
Back in 2003, when SYN was only a baby on the airwaves, an idea was hatched between Channel 31 and SYN to create a new youth television program. Central to that planning was the then SYN President Craig Twitt, C31 Station Manager Greg Dee, SYN TV Executive Producer Bryce Ives and C31 Chairman Ralph McLean.
Together they met regularly and hatched an idea of creating a simulcast radio and television program. For a new, relatively small community radio station, this project was a turning point in how SYN involved young people in media making.
The success of this program has resulted in hundreds of young people presenting and producing television through SYN’s programs such as SYN TV, 1700 and Get Cereal. Ralph was a critical advocate for the birth of SYN’s television department, leading SYN into being the youth media organisation it is today.
Ralph was an avid supporter of SYN and SYN’s involvement in C31 Melbourne. Over a number of years Ralph provided guidance and advice to many SYN volunteers, the SYN Board and Staff. He regularly tuned into SYN’s programs and was an advocate for SYN in the community.
